The Scale of the Problem


Every year the internet uses over 70 Billion Kilowatt hours to power the more than 7,500 global data centers and thus services that we all use daily. This covers everything from Google, Netflix, Facebook, and that weird site with all the cat photos. That is a massive number. To put that into perspective, powering the internet for one year is the equivalent of:

To put it another way:

  • Website hosting servers each produce 1,390 pounds of CO2 annually or roughly 1/6 of what a typical car will annually. 

  • 1 kWh is enough to power ten 100-watt light bulbs for 1 hour. 

  • 1 kWh is enough to power your phone for an entire year. 

  • In 2013 Facebook's data centers consumed 986 Million kilowatt-hours (more than the entire amount of energy consumed by some countries in 2012). 

Thankfully, energy efficiency improvements and increased use of sustainably sourced energy have worked together to decrease the increasing demand for energy even as the total amount of data has increased exponentially.
